Along my spiritual path, I found myself retracting from the world. I craved slowing down, to have stillness around me. It is instinctual to want to reduce the noise around you as you walk your spiritual path. Looking back, I realize this is a crucial part in undoing the programming we receive in this world, the roots of our suffering. In slowing down, I was, and still am, observing the dynamics of my energy to find inner harmony.
When one energy comes into contact with the other, a reaction happens. And if you were ready to go to bed but you open social media and start observing sky-diving videos, there will be an energetic friction. Your energy is low, the phones energy is high. Like Newton’s law says, with every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction. It applies for every person, plant, and thing you are around. You are what you eat, regardless of which sense organ you're consuming through. There is a constant dance of energetic interaction in this world.
So what can we do if we have to drive on the highway every morning for work and we are triggered? What if we need to tend to a screaming baby or sick mother but we haven't slept? For most, our lives can’t just stop because we’re in the spiritual process. But observation is salvation.
By observing your reactions, you are tapping into the true nature of the self- that we are all one. This doesn’t mean to suppress anger, sadness or fear. Observing is to see reactions for what they are: see the over-excitement, see the jealousy, see the wanting and attachment in our lives. See your energy levels flapping in the wind like a tattered flag on a gusty day. After we observe, it is easier to let go of unhealthy habits. Observation will show you how often you are in the fight/flight process. It will show you which TV shows, foods, and people are unhealthy for you, and which make you shine in your true essence.
So if you are on this path of silence, of listening, of becoming more aware - I encourage you to love yourself unconditionally along the way. It is not bad to react, we don’t judge or chastise in Yoga. Instead, focus on relaxing back into your body, into your awareness, into the role of easeful observer. Don’t feel urgency to change anything until you feel it is right and you have a deep knowing inside. The rest will fall into place from there.
